A Salem woman says she hasn't forgotten. This Saturday, January 12, will mark three years since an earthquake devastated the country of Haiti.
On Monday that woman wrote a check to help out and it all started with a trip to a Philadelphia museum. Diane Speaks saw a painting and it left an impression on her.
"I just think it's beautiful the way she was able to capture the faces and everything," says Speaks.
It depicts two Haitians receiving food. A young woman painted it after seeing a picture from the devastation.
"I went back and bought the painting and I took it home and it seemed like it was almost selfish to keep it," says Speaks.
So Speaks got permission to sell framed prints of the painting for $200. She has sold 15 at her shop called She's International in Salem.
"Most of my clients seem to want to put theirs in the dining room to remember to be grateful," says Speaks.
Speaks put away 10 percent of the proceeds from every sale. On Monday, she gave the American Red Cross a check for $300 to help Haiti.
"It's just gonna take time to rebuild everything," says Speaks, "It's just they need all the help they can get."
In exchange she received a certificate of thanks and a pin from the American Red Cross. More checks could come, Speaks plans to continue selling the prints.
