School bus involved in crash in Patrick County

Two Patrick County students were taken to the hospital Tuesday afternoon after their school bus was involved in an accident.

It happened on Route 826, just west of Route 616.  A car crashed head-on into the bus.

The school bus driver was not hurt.

Charlie Lovell of Woolwine was driving the car that crashed into the bus.  He was also taken to the hospital.  No word on his injuries, but we're told he was wearing a seat belt.

Lovell's been charged with failure to drive to the right side of the road.

Here's more information from state troopers:

The Virginia State Police are continuing their investigation into a two vehicle crash involving a Patrick County school bus that occurred Tuesday afternoon around 3:15 p.m. on Route 826 just west of Route 616 in Patrick County.

The preliminary investigation revealed that a 2003 GMC Blue Bird bus was traveling eastbound when it was struck almost head-on by a 2000 Dodge Neon that was traveling westbound.

The school bus driver Rebecca Spencer, age 55, of Stuart, Virginia was not injured in the crash but two female students on the bus were transported to Pioneer Hospital in Stuart with non life threatening injuries.

The driver of the Dodge Neon Charlie Lovell, age 72, of Woolwine, Virginia was wearing a safety belt at the time of the crash and he also was transported to Pioneer Hospital for injuries he sustained in the crash.

 Lovell was charged with fail to drive to the right side of the roadway.
