The 2011 Steamin' Summer ShrimpFest is Saturday night at the Salem Civic Center.  The event is a fundraiser for the Salem-Roanoke County Chamber of Commerce Foundation.  The Foundation serves two projects: annual scholarships and retirement on the debt for the Carriage House renovation in Longwood Park.
As far as fundraisers go, few are as tasty as this one.  The event is from 6 - 9 p.m.  Dinner will be served from 6 - 7:30 p.m. with dancing and a silent auction to follow. Tickets are $25 in advance, $30 at the door.
The menu includes Cold Cocktail Shrimp, Hot & Spicy Shrimp, Shrimp & Grits, Teriyaki Chicken-on-a-Stick, Corn on the Cob, Baked Beans, Cole Slaw, Tea & Lemonade.
Tickets are available at Carter Bank & Trust, Salem Civic Center, Salem VA Credit Union, and at the Chamber’s Office in Longwood Park.  For more information call 540-387-0267.

Chef John McCrady was a guest on News 7 Mornin' and made a delicious batch of Shrimp and Grits to preview ShrimpFest.  Here is what Chef John used:

Combine:

Grits: 1 part grits to 4 parts water

8 oz. of sharp white cheddar cheese

Hot Sauce (to taste)

In a Sauté pan combine:

Country Ham or bacon

Garlic

Mushrooms

Then add:

Shrimp, broth, scallions, Worchestershire Sauce and tighten with corn starch
