A small plane crashed in Henry County Tuesday afternoon.
It happened around 12:30 p.m. on Tyler Place in Ridgeway, Virginia. That's just outside Martinsville in Henry County. Police say the pilot, who was taking off from Pace Airport, was flying low after take-off, eventually knocking a few limbs off a tree. Police say the plane then took a nose dive, landing in some brush about a mile away from the airport.
The pilot and his passenger were heading to his home in Knoxville, Tennessee. According to airport employees, he was a flight instructor visiting with local pilots. He teaches airplane safety and fundamentals of flying.
Airport employees tell News7's Justin Ward his plane checked out fine before departure. One employee heard the engine having trouble and drove the length of the runway to make sure the plane had taken off. He heard it go down and was the first to the scene. Emergency crews took the two victims to a Martinsville hospital. We're told they have back injuries.
State police are still investigating what happened.
