Several small brush fires have been reported across Southwest and Central Virginia. However, the smoke smell that so many have reported may actually be coming from a fire hundreds of miles to our east.
Lightning started the fire in the Great Dismal Swamp in eastern Virginia last Thursday. The fire is now up to 5, 963 acres. A change in wind direction has caused the smoke particles to arrive in our area.
For the next couple of days (or until the wind changes direction) the smoke could become thick at times.
The heaviest smoke smell and haze has been reported from Lynchburg to South Boston which are hometowns closer to the fire.
Several small fires are also being reported in the southwestern portion of the state.
