Soap Box Derby Held In Lynchburg

Move over airplanes. Today soap box derby cars took center stage at the Falwell Airport in Lynchburg.   It was all part of the Soap Box Derby, or Hill City Classic. The race was popular in the area back in the 50's and 60's. While the young and young at heart had a great time at the event, the race was also a way to inspire young students. We spoke to organizer Steve Smallshaw. “The purpose is to get kids interested in first of all building their own cars, learning the skills to build their own cars-- learning about science, technology, engineering and math and also the spirit of competition," he said.

Kids around the nation are taking part in similar races and will participate in a national championship in Akron, Ohio in July.
