A local organization is helping a veteran wounded in Iraq.  God's Pit Crew is building a fully furnished home in Danville for Sgt. David Phillippe.

The 31 year old badly injured his knee during a humvee accident.  He will have to walk using a cane for the rest of his life.

Sgt. Phillippe was chosen by a field of more than a dozen candidates.  Randy Johnson of God's Pit Crew told News 7 "he kept saying to me after we told him that he was chosen, he said I don't deserve this.  I said man I can't think of anyone who deserves it more."

More than a 100 volunteers from God's Pit Crew are helping to build the home.  The land and nearly a $100,000 worth of materials have been donated.

Richard Holbrook is a general contractor, donating his time.  He told News 7 "I hope he gets the overwhelming sense that God loves him and we love him, that and thank him, a sincere thanks from the public to him."

Jimmy Farlow, another volunteer on the project, told News 7 "we can't do enough for our veterans.  Our armed veterans are the ones who give us the freedoms we have everyday."

God's Pit Crew still needs to raise $38,000 to finish the home.  If you would like to donate, you can God's Pit Crew at (434) 836-4472.  You can also visit the website at www.godspitcrew.org

The home should be completed by the July Fourth weekend.  God's Pit Crew is planning a dedication ceremony Saturday July 2nd.  That's when Sgt. Phillippe will see the home for the first time.
