Many people will use a deep fryer to cook their Thanksgiving turkey.
But do they know how to use it safely?
Brian Clingenpeel, public education specialist for Roanoke County Fire and Rescue has some tips for turkey fryer usage.
Fill the pot with oil to the proper level to prevent overflow.  The oil can also bubble-over and catch fire if it reaches the flame.
Clingenpeel says the most important rule is to never use a fryer in a garage, car port, breezeway, porch or on a deck.  Place the fryer outside in an open area.
He added, raise and lower food slowly to reduce splatter and burns.  Also, make sure the turkey is completely thawed and dried off.  Water in a frozen turkey expands and can cause an explosion.
The National Fire Protection Association's website offers more information on turkey fryer safety.
