A war over taxes in Blacksburg.

A citizen's group started a petition in July targeting Virginia Tech. They want the college to collect a local meals and lodging tax.

So far the group has collected more than 200 signatures. That includes several Blacksburg restaurants who already collect the 6% tax.

The group, "Play Fair Tech", plans to bring the petition to a festival this weekend. Michael Sutphin says the meals tax would only target visitors.

"We really see this as a fairness issue," says Sutphin, "This isn't something that would hurt Virginia Tech. In fact, it wouldn't affect students or employees."

Virginia Tech says there are many reasons why they shouldn't pay. A spokesperson says the college brings in a lot of money to the area.  A study ten years ago shows students pumped more than $100 million into the local economy.

Also Virginia Tech contends people don't eat at their dining halls to avoid taxes.

On Monday, the Princeton Review released their annual survey of U.S. colleges and Virginia Tech ranked second for "best campus food".
