President Obama hugs Virginia Shelton during Richmond visit

President Obama brought his backyard tour to the backyard of a key Republican critic, stopping Wednesday afternoon in the district of Richmond Congressman Eric Cantor.

Obama wrapped up a three-state swing at the Southhampton Recreation Association in south Richmond.  Meeting with about three dozen people in a town hall setting, Obama acknowledged Americans' frustration with the economy, but argued the Republican alternative is unworkable.

"Last week the Republicans put forward what they call the Pledge to America which purported to say we're going to cut taxes, control spending and we're going to somehow balance the budget," Obama said to the audience, "but when you actually look at it, it was hard to figure how they all added up."

Responding to a question about his leadership, Obama said, "There is no doubt in my mind that the country is stronger than it was a year ago."

Even before Air Force One touched down at Richmond International Airport, Virginia Republicans were offering counterpoint to the President's message. On Tuesday, Lieutenant Governor Bill Bolling criticized the President's economic policies, and argued it's time for the nation to take a new direction.   "And you know what I'm trying to say is acknowledge the need to change course," Bolling told reporters, "acknowledge that the programs you've put in place in the last 18 months have not worked the way you hoped they would."

Obama wrapped up his visit to the rec center shortly after five o'clock Wednesday, after spending about two hours on the ground in Richmond.
