The cry for help is growing louder in Roanoke.

The Rescue Mission has been averaging about 330 people every night and now they're close to hitting a sad milestone.

Right now 57 children are staying at the family shelter. The record is 60.

Director Lee Clark says the big problem is jobs. Many people are having a hard time finding a work.

"We've seen families for the first time who've never been homeless before," says Clark.

April Craig and her three daughters, ages 8 to 12, are staying at the Rescue Mission.  Craig calls it her last resort. She was recently evicted.

"I've been looking for a job for over a month," says Craig, "Not a lot of people are hiring especially a stay-at-home mom."

Craig says she's applied to more than 30 jobs from cashier to child care.

"It gets to me all the time because it's like okay when is it going to turn around, when is it my time to get my luck back on track," says Craig.

While she searches for work, Craig is volunteering at the Rescue Mission helping people just like her.
