It's a loss that has shaken Rocky Mount to its core. Two veteran firefighters killed in the line of duty. On Thursday, a viewing was held for both men inside the volunteer fire department.
Friends, neighbors and fellow firefighters came to the viewing for Chief Posey Dillon, who served 33 years with the department, and fireman Danny Altice, a member for 47 years.
The street outside the Rocky Mount Volunteer Fire Department was shut down for the steady stream of visitors.
Buses and golf carts were used to take people to and from the viewing. For many people this was a way to reach out and show they care.
"I wanted to support the community and support the family and friends and just everybody know that we are praying for them," says Joann Menefee.
Rocky Mount Mayor Steve Angle says the town was touched by the outpouring.
"It's just heartbreaking that we lost these two men," says Angle, "They won't be forgotten and they'll never be replaced."
Funerals for both men will be held in Rocky Mount on Friday.
