The Taubman Museum of Art introduced Della Watkins as its new executive director at a noon news conference Monday.
Watkins has worked at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts since 1997. She most recently served as the director of education.
She starts her new role at the Taubman on Feb. 4. Watkins replaces David Mickenburg, who left when the museum got a new board of directors.
Board members say Watkins brings a lot of energy and excitement to the Taubman.
"My vision is to take on all the momentum that's already in place, so with the free admission and the work of the staff, the exhibition program that's already in place. Now my job is to keep networking," Watkins said.
Since getting rid of admission fees in October, museum admission is up 30 percent from last year.
