Teaching Boating Safety In Franklin County

Virginia is home to some beautiful lakes and rivers and many teens are as anxious to hit the waterways as they are the roadways. But in order to operate personal watercraft you must first receive a Virginia Boating Safety Certificate. 8th grade students at Benjamin Franklin Middle School in Rocky Mount are taking part in a safety course right now. They'll learn emergency procedures that could make the difference between life and death.

We were on-hand today when Art Cournoyer taught the students important rules. “As of July 12, 2012, all people, regardless of age, who operate PWC, must be certified”, he said. More than 300 students are taking part in this class, which is mandated by the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries.
