BLACKSBURG, Va. UPDATED: Friday @ 1:26 p.m.
Blacksburg police are following leads in reference to the suspicious person seen with a rifle near Kipps Elementary School on Prices Fork Road Thursday.
No suspect has been identified. As a precautionary measure, an increased police presence remains in the area during school hours.
Multiple callers reported seeing the man with a rifle near school property around 1:00 Thursday afternoon, police said. Police are calling the callers "credible" and do not believe the report was a hoax.
Anyone with information should call the police department at 540-961-1150 or the tip line at 540-961-1811.
Authorities are looking for a man who was reportedly seen carrying a gun near an elementary school in Blacksburg.
Kipps Elementary and Blacksburg High School were on lockdown earlier Wednesday after someone called police to report a person with a gun.
Kipps Elementary had a supervised release about a half hour behind schedule, while the high schoolers were dismissed on time.
Right now, police have no indication the man spotted with the gun was headed for the schools, just that he was spotted on the adjacent road, Prices Fork Road. But police say they're not taking any chances, and immediately started a systematic search of the area.
Police describe the man as white, with a stocky build. He was seen wearing a blue or black jacket, a dark cap and light-colored trousers. Police say the caller said he was carrying a rifle.
So far, no one matching the description has been spotted in the area.
Kipps Elementary students were released about a half-hour late. Blacksburg High School students are being released on time. Police are still at the schools.
Police issued the following news release regarding the lockdowns at Kipps Elementary and Blacksburg High School:

As of the time of this release both schools are currently still on lock-down and an area canvas is being conducted by police personnel from Blacksburg, Virginia Tech, and Montgomery County.
Blacksburg police and Montgomery County deputies are searching around two schools after a report of a person with a gun.
A Blacksburg Police Department spokesman says Kipps Elementary and Blacksburg High School (which is currently meeting in the middle school building) are locked down. Officers have not found anything, as of 1:45 p.m.
