Opponents of personhood and ultrasound legislation deliver petitions to Governor McDonnell
As state lawmakers prepared to vote on a controversial ultrasound bill Wednesday, a coalition of groups opposing the legislation delivered petitions with more than 30- thousand signatures.

Groups including ProgressVa, Planned Parenthood Advocates of Virginia, NARAL Pro-Choice Virginia and Virginia New Majority organized the petition drive, and representatives took part in a Richmond news conference Wednesday morning. The group also opposes other legislation including the personhood bill that defines life as beginning at conception.

Later, members of the group delivered the petitions to the office of Governor Bob McDonnell.

The ultrasound bill would require a woman to receive an ultrasound examination before an abortion.  Opponents say the legislation will force some women to undergo an invasive, transvaginal procedure.

Supporters of the legislation say the ultrasound is a standard procedure often used by Planned Parenthood that will provide women and doctors with important information about the fetus' gestational age.
