Virginia State Police would like to increase presence in schools

Virginia State Police are taking extra steps to help keeps your child's school safe.

The Salem-Roanoke division of State Police covers 14 counties and wants to increase its presence in all schools in those counties.

Sergeant Bob Carpentieri says that could range from patrolling hallways and attending assembly's to doing paperwork in a school's parking lot.

"These troopers already work these areas.  It's just going to be a part of their daily routine to go to these schools when they have time," said Carpentieri.

Carpentieri also says he needs to figure out the logistics of the proposed program.
