The Virginia Tech football team is ranked No. 20 in the USA Today Coaches Preseason Poll.
This is the Hokies' eighth-straight preseason appearance in the poll. Virginia Tech finished the 2011 season with an 11-3 record and returns several defensive starters.
LSU edged defending national champion Alabama for the poll's top spot.
Florida State is ranked seventh and received one first-place vote. The only other ACC school in the poll is Clemson at No. 14.
The University of Virginia received nine votes in the poll, but did not crack the top 25.
The Hokies open the season on Sept. 3 in Blacksburg against Georgia Tech.
Virginia Tech coach Frank Beamer is one of the 59 coaches who votes in the poll.
Because of NCAA sanctions North Carolina, Ohio State, and Penn State are not allowed to receive votes in the poll.
