After more than 30 years of use, the airport's runway was cracked and uneven. This summer, construction workers improved the runway and re-paved it.
Portions of the runway were closed during construction, which meant only small planes that required a short take-off or landing area could use the airport.
A study recently released showed the Virginia Tech-Montgomery Executive airport has an economic impact in the area of $9 million a year. So, getting the work done quickly, to allow bigger corporate planes to fly in, especially during football season, was a priority.
"It's very important that we're open during events such as the football game. The airport generates a lot of its revenue from selling jet fuel to these aircraft, and so we did finish the project a month and a half," said airport director Michael St. Jean.
For the Virginia Tech vs. Clemson football game on October 1, about 35 airplanes flew into the airport on game day, according to airport officials.
