UPDATE: West Va. man who drowned in New River in Giles County identified

Giles County authorities have identified a West Virginia man who drowned while fishing on the New River.

Sheriff Morgan Millirons says 31-year-old Brian Morris of Fayette County, W.Va., stepped off an underwater ledge while wading on the riverbed.

Searchers found Morris' body in 14 feet of water.

Millirons tells the Bluefield Daily Telegraph Morris that Morris wasn't wearing a life jacket.

The accident occurred Saturday between Glen Lyn and Narrows.

The body of a 31-year-old West Virginia man has been recovered from the New River.

The Bluefield Daily Telegraph reports that it's the first drowning on the river this year.

Giles County Sheriff Morgan Millirons says authorities got a call about a possible drowning between Glen Lyn and Narrows on Saturday morning. The body was found 14 feet under water at about 3 p.m.

Millirons says the victim, whose name was not immediately released, was fishing with two other people and was not wearing a lifejacket.
