WDBJ7 is making sure voters in Southwest Virginia are prepared before they head to the polls.
Changes were made to Virginia voter I.D. laws this year. Remember that state law requires all voters to provide an acceptable form of I.D. at the polls but it does not have to be a photo I.D.
Even if you're voting absentee in person, these I.D. laws still apply to you.
Here's a few photo and non-photo I.D.'s that will work: your Social Security card, a military I.D., your birth cerificate and that must be issued by state, federal or a local government entity, a Medicare or Medicaid card or autility bill as long as your name and address are current.
If you're voting for the first time, some of those will not work. For instance, a Social Security card will not work for first time voters who are voting absentee by mail and in person.
If you registered to vote by mail and did not send in a copy of I.D. with your voter application, you'll need to show either one of these: a current, valid photo I.D., a utility bill, a bank statement, a paycheck or another government document like a voter card.
If you show up today without an I.D., you will be required to vote a provisional ballot.
In order for your vote to count, you will have until noon on Friday, after the election, to deliver a copy of your I.D. to their locality's electoral board.
The doors close and 7:00 Tuesday night.
