A Roanoke woman is glad she gets the newspaper delivered to her home. Her house caught fire around 4a.m. Thursday while she was sleeping. Her newspaper deliveryman showed up just in time. Right now, the woman is staying with her son. She's OK and this is clearly a case of where being in the right place at the right time probably saved her life.
Matthew DeSimone has been delivering papers for 10 years. Today was like no other. “I came up here and I have to deliver her paper to the porch in the back. I got out of my car here and started walking in that direction and I smelled the smoke,” he said.
The woman inside had no idea her house was on fire. It took ten whole minutes of knocking to wake her up.
“She opened the door I said ma'am your house is on fire you gotta come out you gotta get,” he said.
“Like a person said to me today. Fortunately God had me at this spot…for once I was where I was supposed to be,” DeSimone continued.
As for the homeowner, she's said to have a great sense of humor and mentioned how she'd be a bit "toasty" had she been in the home any longer.
