Manheim Township, LANCASTER COUNTY -—Manheim Township firefighters in Lancaster County are slamming, pounding, and feeling their way through a smoke filled building off Fruitville Pike. It's an opportunity to get hands on training they don't always have access to.
Fulton Financial needs to tear down the building for a new Fulton Bank. So, they approached the department and offered it as a training building before that happens. Crews are focusing on advanced rescue skills. Wednesday, one of their drills involved placing a firefighter in a closet and having blindfolded firefighters try to find him while smoke filled the room.
It's that kind of in-the-moment experience and training that can only come from things like this. "Things we don't typically get to do in a real atmosphere - those become some of the most beneficial skills." says Chief Rick Kane. "Skills we hope our guys never have to use, but if we do have to deploy and go in and rescue a firefighter those are skills we need to be very proficient at."
They'll be using the building through the weekend.
A demolition crew comes in Tuesday.
