The utility tells The Journal Gazette that customers have reported someone coming to their doors claiming to represent I&M or other utilities and telling customers their trees need to be trimmed and it will cost a fee. The utility says its employees and contractors do not charge a fee for tree maintenance and removal that is deemed necessary for public safety and service reliability.
The company says it notifies property owners, in writing, weeks in advance of scheduled tree work. It also says its employees and contractors carry appropriate identification and drive clearly marked vehicles.
