Edwards, a Democratic hopeful for U.S. president in 2008, and later the vice presidential running mate with Democratic presidential candidate <a class="taxInlineTagLink" id="PEPLT003513" title="John Kerry" href="/topic/politics/government/john-kerry-PEPLT003513.topic">John Kerry</a>, was indicted on June 3, 2011 for using nearly $1 million (608,000 pounds) in illegal campaign funds to help cover up an extramarital affair during his run for the <a class="taxInlineTagLink" id="PLCUL000110" title="White House" href="/topic/politics/government/executive-branch/white-house-PLCUL000110.topic">White House</a>.
