1986 - Pitcher Don Sutton of the California Angels failed to win his 300th game.

1991 - South Dakota native Tom Byrum followed a first-round 68 with a second-round 80 and missed the U.S. Open golf tournament cut by one stroke.

1996 - Payne Stewart shot a one-over par 71 on the second day of the U.S. Open in Bloomfield Hills, Mich., but still leads three other players by a stroke. Onida native Curt Byrum is eight shots off the pace after rounds of 70 and 76.

2001 - Fred McGriff doubled and homered and drove in three runs to lead the Tampa Bay Devil Rays to a 6-3 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies.

2006 - Despite being out-hit 8-2, the Aberdeen Smittys defeated Groton 3-1 in the first game of an American Legion baseball doubleheader. Aaron Gellhaus pitched a two-hitter and Jordan Foster and Eric Cantwell had three hits each as Aberdeen rolled to a 10-3 win in the nightcap.

2010 - Ryan Ludwick drove in four runs with a double, home run and a sacrifice fly to lead the St. Louis Cardinals to a 9-3 victory over the Seattle Mariners.
