State women's hoops: Mount squeaks past UMES, 62-58

With the combined strength of Selina Mann, Sydney Henderson and Jacqueline Brewer, Mount St. Mary's claimed a 62-58 victory over visiting UMES (1-4) in women's basketball Wednesday.

Mann finished with 20 points and nine rebounds, while Henderson posted 13 points and 12 rebounds in the win.

The Mount (2-4) held a lead throughout the second half but lost it in the last minute as the Hawks (1-4) tied the game at 58. With 38 seconds remaining, Brewer, a transfer from Virginia Commonwealth making her first start for the Mountaineers, gave them the lead on two free throws. That margin prove to be enough.

Brewer finished with eight points, five rebounds, five assists and three steals.

Karona Roach scored 20 points for the Hawks.

Pittsburgh 57, Loyola 47: Despite taking the lead five times in the first half, the visiting Greyhounds (4-5) lost to the Panthers (6-2) in a tug-of-war game. The Panthers' Ashlee Anderson scored a game-high 17 points, and the Greyhounds' Katie Sheahin scored 16.

Loyola was down by as much as 15 in the second half before a 5-1 run sparked by junior Nicole Krusen.

The guard scored all five of the Greyhounds points, starting with a 3-pointer from the left side with 1:10 left in regulation.

On the next possession, Loyola would force a turnover. Krusen took a shot from behind the arc but missed, and freshman Tiffany Padgett couldn't connect after grabbing the rebound.

Alvernia 64, Stevenson 46: Alvernia's Kayla Long finished with 12 points and 11 rebounds in a win over the visiting Mustangs (3-2). The Crusaders (4-2) took a quick 9-0 lead, expanding it to 40-17 by the end of the first half. Kyarra Harmon led the Mustangs with nine points.

American 70, Coppin State 54: Three players posted double-digit points as American (3-4) earned its second straight home win. Alexis Dobbs scored 16 points for Coppin State, followed by Jen Dumiak's 13 and Ti'Asia McGeorge's 12. American held a lead over Coppin State (3-5) throughout the entire game despite Shawntae Payne's 14 points and Kyra Coleman's 13.

Virginia Commonwealth 70, UMBC 41: The Rams (4-4) won their fourth in five games, defeating the visiting Retrievers (3-6). VCU held a 27-22 lead at the half, but the Retrievers crumbled in the second half as the Rams scored 29 of the last 39 points.

Freshman Jessica Pellechio scored a game-high 20 points for VCU, while teammates Kaneisha Atwater and Robyn Parks each scored 12.

Messiah 72, Hood 39: The visiting Falcons (6-0, 3-0 Commonwealth Conference) limited the Blazers (3-3, 2-1) to four first-half field goals and took a 29-11 advantage into halftime.

Hood's Dyanna Prater connected on five of 15 shots from the field for a team-high 11 points in addition to finishing with three assists and two steals.

The Falcons' Dori Gyori finished with 24 points and 12 rebounds, both game highs.
