Glenview's Lana Gehring has ended Katherine Reutter's four-year reign as U.S. short track speed skating champion.
Gehring won all four individual races and one of the two time trials in three days of racing that ended Sunday at the 2002 Olympic Oval in Kearns, Utah.
Struggling with chronic back abnd hip injuries, Champaign's Reutter wound up fifth. She has decided to undergo hip surgery that will end her season.
Last year, Reutter had become the first U.S. woman in 25 years to win a gold medal at the world championships and the first U.S. woman to win World Cup season event titles.
Both Gehring, 21, (relay bronze) and Reutter, 23, (individual silver, relay bronze) were 2010 Olympic medalists.
