In addition to conceding its butchering of Miami’s infractions case, the NCAA on Monday released its latest men’s basketball Rating Percentage Index. The official “nitty-gritty” reflects games through Sunday and breaks down teams in 16 categories.
With Virginia among many contending for one of 37 at-large bids to the 68-team field, here’s a chart comparing the Cavaliers with some others in key metrics.
Please, please, please remember. Bracket selection is about much more than raw data, and these numbers are meant to illustrate how similar teams can appear.
For example, while Virginia is the only team listed to have played fewer than 10 games against the RPI top 100, the Cavaliers have a signature road victory, at No. 26 RPI Wisconsin, that few rivals can match.
Indeed, among this chart, the only teams with road conquests of opponents ranked above Wisconsin are Charlotte (at No. 18 Butler) and Cal (at No. 10 Arizona).
Moreover, team profiles will change frequently, and often dramatically, in the nearly four weeks before Selection Sunday. Large upcoming games include Virginia at Miami on Tuesday, Iowa State at Baylor on Wednesday, Marquette at Villanova on Saturday, and Temple at Charlotte on Sunday.
