A highly-touted University of Virginia football recruit has enrolled early at UVA and started classes.
The Cavaliers announced Monday that freshman LaChaston Smith enrolled at the school, and will start participating in spring drills.
Smith is a 6-foot, 225-pound linebacker from South Iredell High School in Statesville, N.C.
He missed most of the season, only to return for the playoffs. He was named MVP of the North Carolina Class AA state championship game after running 25 times for 159 yards and three touchdowns. He scored the game-winning touchdown with 19 seconds in the game to seal South Iredell’s 30-27 win over Carrboro.
In the opening round of the state playoffs he ran for seven touchdowns and 191 yards on 13 carries. He did not play in the second half.
Smith was named the Catawba Valley Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Year as a sophomore.
