The Giles Spartans rolled into the postseason with just a single loss to Christiansburg on their resume. The single wingers from Pearisburg averaged 54 points a game in district play and running back Ian Mann entered this week's matchup against James River with a whopping 33 TD's. He also had over 1,800 rush yards already this season and would only add to that against the Knights.

It's early in the Pioneer District schedule but the winner this week between Covington and James River would have the inside track to a district crown. The Cougars won a shootout last season 50 to 48. Covington came into the game with a 4 and 3 record-- 1 and 0 in the District and riding a 2-game win streak. As for James River, this was their District opener and they were at 500 on the season.

It was homecoming in Buchanan on Friday night where the James River Knights were after their third straight win, following a season opening loss to Lord Botetourt. Quarterback Kyle King was a game changer for James River last week against Altavista, but King was hobbled by an ankle injury Friday night and did not see the field. Sherman Austin filled in nicely for King.
