It's time now for a trip to the Dogwood District where the Gretna Hawks have put up plenty of points in a current four game winning streak. Kevin Saunders and his team faced an Appomattox team Friday night that still had district title hopes at Lester Bond Field.
The Raiders brought their 4-4 record into their final road game of the season against a 7-2 Gretna team.
It was tied at 17 in the third quarter, when Santonio Witcher got after Raiders quarterback Deion Edwards, and then Tayquon Oakes came through and delivered the final blow to take Edwards down at the goalline.
Both teams were struggling offensively in the second half, until Gretna put together a drive. Dyon Rosser got a big gain -- only stopped-up by his own feet.
Appomattox held them up briefly when Kendall Thomas sacked Rosser in the backfield to bring up 3rd-and-11.
But the Hawks kept after it. On the very next play, Rosser hit Von Bennett wide open in the middle for the first down and then some.
And then two plays after that, Rosser ended up keeping it himself and getting in around the left side for the touchdown, and that ended up being your game winner with 3:30 to play.
Gretna defeated Appomattox 24-17.
