The Christiansburg Blue Demons head to Broadway Saturday afternoon for a date with the 12-0 Gobblers. The three-time defending Region IV champs have knocked on the door of a state championship game berth in each of the past two seasons.
With only one loss on the season and riding three wins into the state semifinals, Christiansburg is hoping this will be the year they can finally get to the title game.
"We've lost the last two so I think that's going to fuel us a little bit," Christiansburg quarterback Brenden Motley said. "Third time's the charm so we're going to get after it this time."
"I talked to the kids first of all and we're not putting pressure on ourselves because this is our third trip and we feel like we have to win it," Tim Cromer, Christiansburg head coach said. "We're trying to look at it each year as it's own separate entity and we're just very thankful to be able to play this game the last 2 years. We understand that a semi-final game is tough to win."
With players and coaches that have been there before, this group could be the one to break though the semifinal barrier.
"We've been here before. We know what to expect from each other," Motley said. "Coaches expect a lot out of us so we'll be ready coming in. We'll be focused."
"It's as good as last year's team," Cromer said. "I believe it's a little better than the 2009 team. This team has continued to improve offensively. This is probably the most explosive team that we've had as far as our running game goes. The thing I like about this team is I feel like this year we certainly played real well in the Regional Final game. Maybe we're peaking at the right time. It's comparable to the last two teams we've had."
The Blue Demons will travel to take-on fellow number one seed-- a 12 and oh Broadway team.
"We watched a little bit of film on them," Motley said. "They look like a really good team. They are sound in a lot of things they do. They get to the ball. They look like a pretty good team."
"Broadway's a well coached football team. Very fundamentally sound," Cromer said. "You're not 12 and oh unless you're very good and they're Region III Champions. We'll have to be at our best as far as our effort. The quarterback, #15 and then the tailback, #32, are what make them go on offense. And they're very good up front. They run a spread offense."
But just because it's the state semifinals, doesn't mean anything's changed regarding their preparation for the game.
"Approach it like we always do. We want to go 1 and oh this week and that it's the next game on our schedule and just like every other game -- as long as we take car of what we can do as far as being Christiansburg High School Football team, we'll have a shot," Cromer said.
