Lord Botetourt was on the road at Staunton River where the Golden Eagles tailback Meech Coles was already nearing the 1,000 yard mark on the season.
Staunton River contended for the Blue Ridge crown last year until the regular season finale. Early on, the Eagles looking like contenders again. QB Cody Jones fakes everybody out. He's going right up the gut and slipping into the endzone on the touchdown for the early Staunton River lead.
But Botetourt hung tough, courtesy the big play. Will Kline avoids the rush and throws to Jay Phillips. Phillips does the heavy lifting on this one. He gets it done on an 81 yard pass play, cutting a rug and getting to the sideline, and outrunning the defense, and scoring the touchdown, stretching for the pylon at the end.
But Staunton River had an answer for that. Trevian White earning some tough yards between the tackles. And then he turns it over to Coles.
Meech gets past the line of scrimmage and it's off to the races. He's going on a 61 yard touchdown gallop. The Golden Eagles soar over Botetourt Friday night 42 to 6 the final.
