Honaker might be best known as the alma mater of former UVA and current Pittsburgh Steelers tight end Heath Miller.
Saturday’s game won't be the first for George Wythe on the final Saturday of the season. That took place back in 1983 when current head coach H.S. Ingo was the center for the Maroons who faced Courtland in the finals, falling in a tightly contested 14-7 ballgame, under the direction of head coach Paul Wheeler.
While Ingo didn't get a ring that day as a player, he has a huge opportunity to get one as a head coach.
"History, as I tell our kids, history has an opportunity sometimes to repeat itself and we did lose in 1983,” Ingo said. “It was a heartbreaker. We lost 14-7 on a fake punt. This is something that I told our kids that they'll never forget. Regardless of the outcome on Saturday, they'll never forget the opportunity to play in such an elite game where you're one of the best teams in the state. Win or lose, you're in the final two and it's a nice situation to be in as a coach that's played in a game like this and also to have been able to coach in it before."
