It was homecoming this week in Rustburg and the Red Devils were looking to feed off of that energy.
On the opening drive for Liberty, Matt Smith took the handoff straight up the gut, used his strength and stiff-armed a Red Devil defender. Smith broke away and raced 34 yards to paydirt. Starting the Minutemen up 7-zip early.
Matt Smith has a common name, but you may want to remember it. Smith was doing some work tonight. On another play he changed directions, found a burst of speed up the sideline. Smith went 42 yards to the house. Liberty was up 13.
Smith wasn't done. He was like M-C Hammer ... can't touch him. Smith went 27 yards for his third touchdown of the first quarter. Minutemen were up 19-zip.
Two plays after a Rustburg turnover Liberty called Austin Porter's number. He got in from 9-yards out. It was a nice hard-earned touchdown. After the opening quarter Liberty was up by 27. Rustburg was in a deep hole but they didn't go away easily. Junior QB Randall Jones saw daylight and came up just short of the goal line, but on the very next play he punched it in.
That wasn't enough, Liberty hung on for the 50-21 win over Rustburg.
