Staunton River played its first game of the season this week. It was a big one where Bedford County bragging rights were concerned, at Jefferson Forest.
Jefferson Forest's Ryan Crist kept it on the 9 yard run putting the Cavaliers on top 7 to 3 late in the first quarter. Then the defense made a play. Kamden BeKraft intercepted the pass from Eagles Quarterback Sean Martin and returned it 20 yards, helping the home team keep the momentum. On the very next play, Crist connected with Dominque Royal on a 25 yard touchdown through the air and it was 14 to 3.
Later Martin looked for a reciever down field, but decided to tuck it under. He kept his legs moving on the nice run all the way down to the JF 8 yard line. Chris Tyree took things from there. He lept his way across the goal line making the score 14 to 10 and the Eagles were thinking comeback.
Two plays after a fumble recovery, Martin burst up the gut for another Eagle touchdown putting River on top 17 to 14. But Jefferson Forest would win this back and forth affair tonight 38 to 30.
