Staunton River made the trek across Bedford County on Friday night to face Liberty. Both the Golden Eagles and the Minutemen hoped to establish the run in a big way.
The Minutemen were jacked up early because it was their first time taking the field through a brand new inflatable tunnel.
But things weren't all good early. Liberty's Traveon Lightfoot was wide open, but a pass bounces off his hands and into the paws of Staunton River's Dontel Moon. The Golden Eagles couldn't cash in on the turnover though.
Liberty with the ball a little later and on 2nd down from the 3, Matt Smith punches the ball into the end zone on the three-yard carry, putting the Minutemen on top. But the point-after try was no good, so it was 6-zip Liberty.
The Minutemen got rolling when Matt Smith shed a few tackles and picked up 56 yards before being dragged down. But on Liberty's very next play James Adkins coughed up the ball and the Eagles get another turnover. Staunton River kept the ball for the final 8 minutes of the half but couldn't score.
Liberty posted the shutout, 24-zip.
