Player of the Week - September 3rd - Cory Bolden

Last week against James River, Cory Bolden may have needed some oxygen on the Glenvar sidelines.  But he was too busy to take a breath, helping the Highlanders fight back from a huge deficit to beat the Knights and take back the rocking chair.  For that, Cory Bolden is our Friday Football Extra Player of the Week.

Bolden was a work horse for Coach Kevin Clifford, rushing 28 times for 149 yards and four touchdowns, as Glenvar erased a 34-14 second half deficit to win 41-34.  All 405 of the Highlanders offensive yards came on the ground.

"Our offensive line was a big part of it.  They destroyed their D-line.  Tim Woods made great blocks and we just pounded it," said Bolden.

"Cory had a great game but we expect that from Cory.  He's 230 pounds, a four-year starter.  We expect Cory to be the player he is and he stepped up and played well in the fourth quarter," said Kevin Clifford, Glenvar head coach.

Cory also kicked five extra points, giving him 29 of the Highlanders 41 on the board, and he played about half the game on defense.  But that wasn't all.

"He blocked for Tim Woods who had 203 yards.  He was sucking wind a little bit, but he works hard in practice so we're getting him conditioning where it needs to be, and honestly in a couple more weeks we'll be in top game shape," said Clifford.

"It's a lot.  The hardest part is just kicking after playing offense.  Then I've gotta switch shoes after every time we score.  It's just a lot. I'm in pretty good shape I guess," said Bolden.

Bolden also suits up for the Highlanders in both basketball and baseball.  But right now, he and the rest of the upperclassmen at Glenvar are intent on winning the school's first district title since 2000.

"He's been a big part of our program over the last four years.  We're glad we have him and we have high expectations, not only for him, but for all our kids.  We work hard and hopefully that hard work will come to fruition and pay off for us down the road," said Clifford.
