With two Lynchburg-area teams playing in the state championship Saturday in Lynchburg, the VHSL's site director says he is expecting between 8,000 and 10,000 in attendance for the games.
In the Group AA Division 3 final, James Monroe (12-1) plays Brookville (13-0) at noon. The Group AA Division 4 title game is at 4:30 p.m. and features Heritage (12-1) trying to knock off unbeaten Briar Woods (14-0). Both games are being played at Liberty University’s Williams Stadium.
Site director William Gouldthorpe says he talked to officials at Brookville and Heritage, and as of early Friday morning a combined 3,000 tickets had been sold at the schools.
Gouldthorpe says tickets are good for both games. However, once you leave Williams Stadium you will have to pay to re-enter. Williams Stadium holds about 19,000 fans.
Another area team, George Wythe (12-1), is also playing in a state title game Saturday. The Maroons take on Honaker (13-0) at noon Saturday at Salem Stadium for the Group A Division 1 championship. The 4:30 p.m. game at Salem Stadium features Goochland (12-2) against Essex (14-0).
Tune into WDBJ7’s Friday Football Extra at 11:15 p.m. for preview stories on George Wythe, Brookville and Heritage. We’ll also take a look back in our archives.
