Cave Spring High School has named a new boys basketball coach.

Jacob Gruse, an assistant coach at Averett Unviersity, has been named the Knights’ new coach. He takes over for Billy Hicks.

Gruse coached Dan River High School to several state playoff appearances. He was named the 2008-09 Region B Coach of the Year.

“As a coach, I want my student-athletes to understand that I am not only a part of their life to teach them the fundamentals and principles of basketball, but I also serve to teach them vital life skills that they can carry with them throughout their lives,” Gruse wrote in a statement.

Jacob Gruse, current assistant coach at Averett University will return to coaching high school basketball as the boys basketball head coach for the Cave Spring Knights. Gruse is a former head basketball coach for Dan River High School and South Davidson High School. He holds a bachelor of science in education from Concord University.

During his time with Averett University, he helped the team to a second place finish in the USA South Conference and as head coach at Dan River H.S., he led the team to several state playoff appearances, including the 2008-9 state championship game where the team was state runner-up. Gruse also was named the Region B Coach of the Year.

“As a coach, I want my student-athletes to understand that I am not only a part of their life to teach them the fundamentals and principles of basketball, but I also serve to teach them vital life skills that they can carry with them throughout their lives,” Gruse said of his coaching philosophy.

“Coach Gruse will be a fantastic addition to the Knights,” said CSHS principal Steve Spangler. “He brings a great deal of basketball experience and I know our students will greatly benefit from his wisdom and knowledge,” Spangler added.
