COVINGTON, Va. -

The annual Battle for the Brackman Cup took center stage tonight at Covington's Casey Field where Alleghany's Gary Burdette made his coaching debut after taking over for Jack Baker who left for Rustburg in the offseason.

The Cougars have been on the wrong end of this rivalry too many times in recent memory- and were out to change that.

Kendall Kessinger got the party started for the Mountaineers.  He took the kick and found some daylight 38 yards out to the 45 yard line and Alleghany had some good starting field position but the drive stalled out from there.

Late in the first quarter, Covington was on the move at midfield where Trevor Jack took the screen pass, put on a move and took it down the sideline on the 52 yard TD.  The Cougars were on top 7 to nothing.

Covington had more where that came from.  Luke Moye did his best Tim Tebow impersonation on the jump pass to Raquann Matthews.  That went for first down yardage, but the Cougars couldn't turn it into points.

Alleghany put together a nine play drive shortly thereafter.  Daniel Unroe capped it off with a touchdown run off the left side.  The Mountaineers were out front 7-6 late in the second quarter. But Covington rallied back to beat Alleghany 18 to 14.
