The Giles Spartans looked to continue their unbeaten season this week against Appomattox in Pearisburg.
Giles was putting their 11-0 season on the line as they look to advance past Appomattox.
The Raiders enter 7-4 looking to steal one on the road on a rainy night in Pearisburg.
The Spartans got things rolling-- Tyler Perdue got the handoff on the opening drive and took it down to the one yard line.
Brett Whitlow takes it in from one yard out to give the Spartans an early 7-0 lead.
On the ensuing possession Tevin Morgan got the flip and took it all the way down inside the five yard line.
Quarterback Kendall Blankenship then called his own number and it was tied at 7.
Doug Smith, Appomattox Head Coach “We came out with a lot of aggression, the kids knew their game plan and they did it well. I just think it was two pretty tough teams going at each other.”
The Raiders would add another score to take a 14-7 lead in the middle of the second quarter-- but Giles came back Perdue with the 11 yard touchdown run ties the game up at 14.
Appomattox was driving just before halftime, Blankenship fired over the middle but Perdue doing it on defense picking it off.
The Spartans drove down and had a chance to then go up with nine seconds left but the Raider Dee Strong stuffing them on the goal line.
Jeff Williams said, “The first six minutes of the first half and the first six minutes of the second half are critical. We figured hey the game is tied up but we were real sad about not punching it in down there.”
Doug Smith, “It was huge. Our kids believed all week.. We just pulled together. We have a great group of guys and they believe in each other and they believe in team.”
After a scoreless third quarter-- Appomattox seemed poised to take the lead deep in Giles territory.
But after a few penalties they were faced with a 4th and 17 when the Blankenship pass fell incomplete.
Giles then began running the football and the clock and tick, tick, tick.
From 29 yards out a fourth down-- Brett Whitlow spotted up and nailed the field goal with 5.7 seconds left to give Giles the 17-14 lead as that'd be all in this one as the Spartans win it 17-14.
Brett Whitlow, “We all bonded together and it was the second round of the playoffs and it's the playoffs. You have to play hard or you're going home. So we came out in the second half we decided we were going to pound it and we did.”
Williams, “That's just spartan football and that's how we're going to do things and come off the ball and just get four or five yards a click and get a first down, three plays to get a first down. Two plays to get a first down.”
After a 17-14 victory with a last second field goal from Brett Whitlow, Giles County will host a regional semi-final game in the third round of the VHSL State Playoffs.
