Altavista's lone loss this season came to Gretna on October 4th. That same night, Essex lost a tight one, 40-37 against 3A finalist James Monroe for its only loss of the year.
The Trojans are back in the finals for a second consecutive season. They came up short a year ago but got back to the title tilt thanks to last week's win over Fort Chiswell.
Now comes a showdown with the Colonels in Salem.
“Altavista, I think James Monroe would be similar and that was our one loss of the season,” coach John Fulks said. “It was a good team and they remind me a lot of them. They're athletic, and they remind me a lot of us, speed at every position. I coached against them when I was coaching at West Point in a semifinal game when they won the championship that year. They're very well coached. The kids line up right and they fly to the ball and I truly think the two best teams have advanced to the championship, and it's going to be a dogfight.”
