Coach Taylor Edwards won his first and only state championship at Martinsville in 1988, as the Bulldogs knocked off Nottoway.

But that wouldn't have even been possible without a trademark comeback against Rustburg in the Region III Championship game.

Danny Davis and the Rustburg Red Devils rolled into Dan Green Stadium in Martinsville and took control of the regional championship game from the outset. Davis rushed for two scores and threw for another helping the Red Devils to a 26-7 lead with just 10 minutes left to play.

But Kirk Goode rallied Martinsville with two quick touchdown tosses that cut the deficit to a single score.

And then late in the game, PJ Preston took the ball on the reverse and launched a near perfect strike to Vincent Jamison for the tying score with a buck 42 left.

Cotton Randall came on to boot the game winning extra point as Martinsville scored the final 21 points of the game to win the Region III crown, 27-26.
