Blacksburg Coach Dave Crist began his 40th and final season on the sidelines this week at Bill Brown Stadium. The two time state champion coach, took on a team with a 15 game winning streak tonight, the defending 2A state champs from Giles.

I twas not an easy opener by any stretch for Crist and the Bruins.

Early in the first quarter, Patrick Beidleman, the Fort Chiswell transfer, got Giles rolling as he broke off the nice 25 yard run to put Giles at the 35 yard line.

5 plays later, Brett Whitlow got the snap and found the zone to put the Spartans on the board with an easy 4 yard run. The extra point was good, Giles was up 7-0. The Spartans held the ball for 9 minutes in the opening quarter.

In the second quarter, the Bruins still had no answer for the run. Beidleman got the call again and this time he reeled off a 33 yard scamper down to the Blacksburg 32.

On second and goal, it was Mann who snuck in for the Spartans who had a two score advantage. Giles went on to knock off Blacksburg 41 to 28.
