Blacksburg head coach Dave Crist began his 39th season at the school Friday night. His Bruins fired up the bus for the trip down Route 460 to Pearisburg where they'd need to solve the Giles Spartans and the single wing.
The Spartans were looking for their third straight win over the Bruins.
And it didn't take long to get things started. On the opening kickoff Giles' Brett Whitlow fields it and starts back upfield. Whitlow broke two tackles and got the 2013 season started right for the Spartans. He took it 90 yards to the house. Seventeen seconds into the season and the Spartans got on the scoreboard to make it 6-0.
Blacksburg had some special teams issues. A bad snap over the punter's head resulted in a safety, giving the Spartans an 8-0 lead.
Giles showed off some defense as well. Brian Mann intercepted the Kaleb Bohrenstedt’s pass. Blacksburg took the lead on two TD passes but Giles roared back and hung on for the 38 to 37 win.
