This week in Pearisburg, unbeaten Giles tried to stay that way against Grayson County, a team that has made some playoff noise the past two seasons, making a three hour bus ride for this one.
The Spartans cheerleaders were keeping the crowd into it and the team did its part as well.
Early in the first, Brett Whitlow showed some moves. He broke tackles at the line of scrimmage and then turned upfield. Whitlow ripped up the Blue Devils defense on a 67 yard scoring run. Giles led it 7-nothing.
The Spartans continued to pound the rock, this time with Tyler Perdue. He took the direct snap and rumbled 20 yards on the touchdown, and it was 14-zip early in the second quarter.
More single wing. John Teats started to the near side, shaking defenders. It was another big gainer for the Spartans and another touchdown. 78 yards later, it was a three TD cushion at 21 to nothing, still in the second quarter.
Grayson County was trying to get something cooking. Tyler Lundy faked the handoff and called his own number, hustling to the corner of the endzone. The Devils changed the scoreboard with their first 6 points of the night.
But the Spartans put one away. Perdue was up to his old tricks, outrunning the defense. He was gone 50 yards to the painted grass.
Giles was all over Grayson County 42 to 12.
