In 1990, Gretna Head Coach Kevin Saunders was a grad assistant coach at Virginia Tech. This week Saunders returned to Blacksburg where his Hawks took on the Blacksburg Bruins, led by Virginia Tech grad Dave Crist, at Bill Brown Stadium.
The Bruins led it 13-7 at the break and were smelling the upset tonight at home.
Gretna was trying to grab the lead as Dyon Rosser found Virgil Glass downfield for a 15 yard gain as Gretna picked up some momentum and kept marching.
But a couple of plays later on 4th and 6 from the 24, Korbin Hendricks picked off Rosser after he was chased out of the pocket to give Blacksburg the ball.
The offensive woes continued for Gretna on the next possession. On fourth down, the Bruins defense turned up the heat and brought down Rosser on the sack.
They took him down again in the endzone late in the game for a safety. Blacksburg, in a bit of a surprise, took down Gretna, 15 to 7.
