LYNCHBURG, Va. -

The Heritage Pioneers put its undefeated record on the line Saturday in the 3A semifinals against James Monroe.

The Pioneers marched right down the field on their opening drive. Frankie Hixon capped it off as he snuck in off the left side, making it 7-0 Heritage.

But on the Pioneers’ next possession, Austin Fitzgerald threw a pick over the middle == one of four Heritage turnovers in the game.

That turnover leads to this. Early in the second quarter Jay Scroggins bought himself some time and slipped it into the endzone to Kordell Boyd for the TD. We are tied at 7.

Later in the first half, Scroggins threw it out to Kenrick Wilkins, who stumbles inside the 5 but is able to stretch across the goal line for the score, giving the Yellow Jackets the 14-7 lead at the half.

Hixon made it a 14-13 game early in the fourth when he scooted in again, but the extra point is blocked and Heritage still trails by one.

Heritage is down to its last chance inside 2 minutes to go. Fitzgerald went over the middle to Tyron Tracy, who broke off a big play by getting to the outside. He took it inside the 15 yard line where he was dragged down.

The Pioneers called a timeout with 2 seconds to play to set-up the game-winning 27-yard field goal, but Kieran Phelps hooked it wide.
